Christmas Eve boxes

I saw a few years ago a lot of people were doing Christmas Eve boxes and that to me seemed like such a cute little thing to do the night before Christmas. A nice way to extend the ‘magic’ for a little longer and build up the anticipation and excitement. So I started this on Henry’s first Christmas with a small box. All it had in it were Christmas pyjamas and a Christmas book. Although he had no idea I really loved it so I think we may have made this a little family tradition.

Every Christmas from now I will get the children Christmas pjs for their box so it means they can actually wear their new Christmas pjs for Christmas Eve. This will always be the starting point for their boxes.

Then as they get older I plan on including hot chocolate mixes and a Christmas movie, maybe some movie snacks to all enjoy on Christmas Eve. But for now as they are small this is what they have this year.

Be Thankful this Thanksgiving.

As you know I’m from the UK, Essex to be precise so Thanksgiving is not something we usually celebrate here. However I looked through my diary the other day and I noted that it said Thanksgiving was coming up, this got me thinking. Dangerous, I know! What have I got to be Thankful for? Yes there is a lot, but apart from the obvious, my family, my husband, my children etc, one thing kept springing to mind, ‘Mummy club’. This is where this post gets a little self-indulgent perhaps.

What is ‘mummy club?’ It’s probably not as interesting as it sounds but for me (and I’m sure the others would agree) it’s been crucial and has possibly been the biggest support system I could have hoped for during motherhood.

Let me elaborate, when I was pregnant in 2013 with Henry a friend of mine who I worked with was also pregnant. At that time, she was the only other person I knew who was. She became a bit of a walking pregnancy expert for me, she was ahead by a few months, so everything I was going through, she already had, and it was still fresh in her mind. Yes, our pregnancies were different, she had sickness, I didn’t for example, but having her there, going through it at the same time was Amazing. Add a couple of months and my closest friend then became pregnant. These 2 women didn’t know each other but they both helped me a lot on different levels.

Autumn Days

I love all the seasons, I don’t think I could pick a favourite. I’m extremely indecisive, (half the problem) but they all give me something different to enjoy. As we are in Autumn, let’s talk about Autumn shall we?

I love the changing leaves, the yellow, burnt orange, red and brown. I love how they fall down and carpet roads and pavements in a crunchy tapestry of autumnal colours. I love the nights drawing in, the chill in the air, the crisp fresh sometimes frosty mornings. I love how it makes you want to curl up inside with lots of blankets and a hot chocolate or 2, I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

I embrace (perhaps a bit too often) the way it makes you feel like you want to hibernate, in the warm and cosy. As soon as it looks remotely like summer is over my husband often jokes about me putting the heating on. I am always cold! So with my enjoyment of hibernation I set our family (and myself, mostly) a little challenge to try to get out and about a bit more in the fresh air through the autumn and winter.

Henry’s favorite books list

I thought I would do a quick post on some of Henry’s favourite books. He’s got more into listening to books lately so I thought it would be a good idea to have a list post as he definitely seem to have a few he goes back to very often.

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.

This has become a firm favourite of all of us so far, we really love the rhyming story and the illustrations. The story follows a small brown mouse though the woods in search of a nut, as he wanders he meets a few characters who would like to ‘eat’ him. He manages to wriggle out of each scenario by telling each one he’s having lunch with a Gruffalo. As far as the mouse knows the Gruffalo is something he has just made up. Continue reading
